Hintergrundinformationen über Bimas
Bimas Familie gehört der Volksgruppe der Tamang an, was auf tibetanisch so viel bedeutet wie Pferdehändler. Vor ca. 1000 Jahren siedelten sich die Tamang im Norden Nepals an. Sie leben vor allem südlich des Ganesh Himal, im Helambu und auf den Hügelkämmen südlich von Kathmandu. Sie sind eine der größten tibeto-mongolischen Ethnien des Landes. Auf Grundlage der letzten Volkszählung wird die Zahl der Tamang auf über 1.5 Mio geschätzt, was etwa fünf Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung entspricht. Der soziale Status innerhalb der nepalesischen Gesellschaft ist niedrig. Die Tamang sind Lamaisten (buddhistische Gelehrte) mit vielen eigenen Klöstern, zudem spielt der Schamanenkult bei ihnen eine große Rolle. Sie gehören der tibetanischen Form des Buddhismus und des Lamaismus an, gemischt mit Elementen aus dem vorbuddhistischen Bön. Aufgrund ihrer Nähe zu den Newar kann auch ein leichter hinduistischer Einfluss in ihren Ritualen erkannt werden.Sie leben meist in größeren Dorfgemeinschaften in Höhenlagen von 1500 Metern und höher. Ihre Sprache heißt Rangitam und ist mit dem Tibetischen verwandt. In den einzelnen Regionen ihres Siedlungsgebietes sind auch starke Dialekte zu hören, die derart voneinander abweichen, dass sich manche Tamang untereinander in Nepali verständigen müssen. Ihre Haupteinkommensquelle liegt heute im landwirtschaftlichen Bereich. Als Bergbauern pflanzen sie vor allem Reis, Mais, Hirse, Gerste und Weizen an. Auf den Trekkingtouren werden sehr oft Tamang als Träger beschäftigt, da sie einen ausgezeichneten Ruf als starke und zuverlässige Begleiter haben. Auch viele Köche und Sirdar (Bergführer) stammen heute aus dieser Volksgruppe. Insgesamt gehören die Tamang zu ärmeren Bevölkerungsgruppen.
Bimas lebt mit seinen Großeltern in einem kleinen Häuschen in den Bergen am nordöstlichen Ende des Distrikts Kavrepalanchok, am Fuße des Himalayas und etwa 100 Kilometer Luftlinie südwestlich des Mount Everest. Die Familie war schon immer sehr arm, da sie keine konstante Einkommensquelle haben und wodurch sie Betroffene der Armutsfalle, also des Kreislaufs aus Armut, Bildungslosigkeit und Krankheit sind. Als Bimas etwa zwei Jahre alt war hat sein Vater die Familie verlassen. Zu ihm besteht seitdem kein Kontakt mehr. Seine Mutter hat die Familie ebenfalls verlassen, um in der Grenzstadt Janakpur, in einem anderen Teil des Landes, Arbeit zu finden. Sie arbeitet dort als Reinigungskraft in einem Hotel. Das wenige Geld, das sie dort verdient, reicht kaum für sie selbst zum Leben. Dennoch schickt sie, wann immer sie kann, etwas zu ihren Eltern und ihrem Sohn. Bimas Großeltern besitzen nur ein kleines Feld, welches sie bewirtschaften und das ihnen hilft sie zu ernähren. Aber es reicht bei Weitem nicht aus, um alle Familienmitglieder zu ernähren. Deshalb arbeiten sie zusätzlich auf den Feldern anderer Menschen in der Region und sie haben einige Nutztiere, die sie aufziehen und dann verkaufen. Hierdurch können sie ab und zu ein kleines Einkommen erwirtschaften, um Kosten zu decken, beispielsweise für Nahrungsmittel oder einen Teil der Schulkosten. Seine Großeltern kommen selbst aus sehr armen Familien, sodass auch auf dieser Seite keine Ressourcen vorhanden sind. Damit die gesamte Familie genug zum Leben hat, ist auch die Bimas gezwungen gelegentlich arbeiten zu gehen, wenn sich die Möglichkeit bietet. In der Regel ist dies Feldarbeit, das Versorgen der Tiere, Wasser zum Haus tragen und andere alltägliche Arbeiten. Sein Großvater ist für nepalesische Verhältnisse schon sehr alt und hat gesundheitliche Probleme. Einige Tätigkeiten fallen ihm sehr schwer, insbesondere weite Strecken in den Bergen kann er nur sehr langsam zurücklegen, da sein Gleichgewichtssinn beeinträchtigt ist, was schnell sehr gefährlich werden kann bei den schmalen Pfaden entlang des Abgrunds. Auch ohne die Erkrankung wäre es für Bimas’ Großeltern sehr schwer für ihn zu sorgen und sicherzustellen, dass er die Schule regelmäßig und langfristig besuchen kann. Mit einer körperlich oder psychisch schwer beeinträchtigenden Erkrankung in den Bergregionen Nepals zu leben ist wirklich ein Problem, denn die medizinische Versorgung ist sehr schlecht. Es gibt nur wenige kleine Gesundheitsposten (Health Posts), die weit entfernt voneinander stehen, was für die meisten Menschen mehrere Stunden Fussmarsch bedeutet. Hinzu kommt, dass sie nur auf die Primärversorgung ausgerichtet sind, was sie in vielen Fällen aufgrund der Unterfinanzierung nicht einmal gewährleisten können. Die dort arbeitenden Gesundheitshelferinnen und -helfer sind für die Beurteilung und Behandlung komplexer Erkrankungen weder ausgebildet noch ausgestattet. Praktisch alle über dieses Health Post-Niveau hinausgehenden medizinischen Leistungen sind nur in den noch weiter entfernten Städten verfügbar und vor allem kostenpflichtig. Deshalb haben viele, insbesondere arme Menschen in den Bergregionen im Prinzip kaum einen Zugang zu einer Gesundheitsversorgung.
Alltag ist bislang vor allem, dass Bimas seine Großeltern immer wieder tagsüber bei der Feldarbeit begleitet, statt in die Schule zu gehen, insbesondere wenn das Essen knapp ist oder er keine Schulmaterialien hat. Während der Corona-Pandemie herrschte in Nepal zwischen März 2020 und August 2021 ein fast durchgängiger Lockdown, der in manchen Regionen auch heute noch besteht und in Bergdörfern schwer durchzusetzen und zu kontrollieren ist. Aber die Menschen haben sehr viel Angst vor der Erkrankung, weil sie das Gesundheitssystem innerhalb weniger Tage zum Zusammenbruch gebracht hat und viele Menschen allein durch Mangel an Sauerstoffflaschen und Medikamente gestorben sind. Ein Problem der Bergdörfer ist, dass viele Söhne, Väter, Töchter oder Mütter in den Städten oder im Ausland arbeiten, in Zeiten des Lockdowns keinen Job mehr haben und zurück zu ihren Familien wollen und müssen (kein Geld, keine Miete, kein Zimmer). Dadurch werden Infektionen bis in die entlegenen Regionen gebracht, wo eine Erkennung und Behandlung fast unmöglich sind. Auch der Schulunterricht ist davon betroffen. In manchen Regionen, die besonders stark involviert sind, gibt es seit März 2020 keinen Schulunterricht. In anderen Regionen wird seit Ende 2020 versucht einen minimalen Unterricht aufrechtzuerhalten, mit Unterbrechungen durch neue Infektionswellen, vor allen aus Indien. Bimas geht zwar noch in die Grundschule und braucht noch nicht so viele Dinge für die Schule. Wenn es aber in den Wintermonaten kalt ist und er keine warme Kleidung hat, friert er in der Schule, da Schulen in Nepal keine Heizung haben. Er ist dann häufiger krank, was ein zusätzliches finanzielles Problem darstellt. Zusammen verdient die Familie durchschnittlich über das Jahr verteilt etwa 3.000 bis 4.000 Rupien im Monat (ca. 22 bis 30 Euro). Andere Einkommensquellen gibt es praktisch nicht. Die Corona-Pandemie und insbesondere der seit März 2020 fast durchgänig anhaltende Lockdown, haben die Möglichkeiten weiter reduziert, vermutlich längerfristig, da das gesamte Land dadurch in seiner wirtschaftlichen, gesundheitspolitischen und sozialen Entwicklung Schätzungen der Regierung zufolge, um etwa zehn Jahre zurückgeworfen wurde. Mit besonders harten Konsequenzen für die ärmsten und marginalisierten Volksgruppen in der Gesellschaft. Ebenso ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit sehr hoch, dass auch Kinderheirat oder gar Kinderhandel, ähnlich wie nach den verheerenden Erdbeben 2015 wieder zunehmen werden.
Für Bimas regelmäßigen Schulbesuch fehlt schon jetzt in der Grundschule häufig das Geld, beispielsweise für Dinge wie warme Schuhe oder eine Jacke. Eine Schulgebühr ist im Augenblick nur zu Beginn des Schuljahres erforderlich. Je älter die Kinder werden, umso höher werden aber natürlich die Kosten im Zusammenhang mit der Schule, da zusätzliche Fächer hinzukommen und sie mehr Bücher, Hefte und andere Schulmaterialien brauchen. Auch wenn die Regierung die Vorgabe macht, dass staatliche Schulen kostenlos sein sollen, versuchen viele Schulen zusätzliche Unterrichtsfächer anzubieten, um ein annähernd vergleichbares Bildungslevel, wie die privaten Schulen zu erlangen. Da allerdings das staatliche Budget der Schulen dafür nicht ausreicht, müssen die Schulen diese Kosten über Gebühren für diese Fächer decken. Das führt zu einer zweiten Ebene der Diskriminierung innerhalb des staatlichen Bildungssystems, neben der zwischen privaten und staatlichen Schulen. Kinder wie Bimas haben unter diesen Bedingungen im Prinzip kaum eine Chance auf einen Schulabschluss und der Druck durch die Armut und den Hunger ist groß, weshalb die Zahl der arbeitenden Kinder in Nepal, trotz des offiziellen Verbots, so hoch ist. Kinder und Jugendliche sind natürlich ungelernte Arbeitskräfte und arbeiten deshalb meist auf den Feldern, auf Baustellen, als Geldeinsammler in Bussen oder als Tellerwäscher. Für Jungs aus Nepal, die keinen Schulabschluss und keiner weiterführende Bildung haben, ist heutzutage oft die einzige Zukunftsperspektive für sich und ihre Familie, einen Job im Ausland zu finden. Es haben sich viele sogenannte Manpower Companies entwickelt, die junge Nepalesen als kostengünstige Arbeitskräfte in die arabischen Länder wie VAE, Katar, den Oman oder Saudi-Arabien vermitteln, aber auch nach Indien oder Malaysia, wo es neben menschenverachtender Ausbeutung immer wieder auch zu gewalttätigen Übergriffen gegen sie kommt. Die Nepalesen sind ein hart arbeitendes und fleissiges Volk, Zehn- oder fünfzehnstundentage sind völlig normal. Das Problem ist vielmehr, dass die Gehälter für nicht ausgebildete Menschen viel zu niedrig sind, um davon eine Familie ernähren zu können. Für Mädchen ist es leider auch noch Realität, dass viele weit vor ihrem achtzehnten Lebensjahr verheiratet werden, wobei auch die Jungs dann in der Regel zwar etwas älter, aber oft ebenfalls noch minderjährig sind. Hierbei ist sehr häufig der wirtschaftliche Druck der entscheidende Antrieb dahinter und weniger eine religiöse oder kulturelle Motivation. Es geht für uns bei unserer Arbeit neben der Ausbildung der Kinder entsprechend ihren individuellen Talenten und Fähigkeiten auch darum, zukunftsfähige Qualifikationen zu ermöglichen, damit sie die Möglichkeit erhalten, diese in ihrem Land zur Geltung zu bringen und nicht in einem der oben genannten Länder. Hierzu müssen individuelle und strukturelle Voraussetzungen gleichermaßen gegeben sein oder geschaffen werden.
